The premium-vs-mid-range glass choice

Frameless vs semi-frameless glass pool fence.

Both are glass. Both look modern. The real difference is in the mounting system and the visual gap. Here’s the honest comparison.

The construction difference.

Frameless: spigots only.

12mm toughened glass panels supported by 316 stainless steel base spigots (2 per panel) drilled into the concrete coping. NO top rail. NO vertical posts between panels. Panel-to-panel gap is ~5mm. Visual read: nearly invisible from a distance.

Semi-frameless: panels + posts.

10mm toughened glass panels supported by powder-coated aluminium posts (typically 40mm × 40mm) at every panel join, spaced 1.5–1.8m apart. Posts visible — usually black, white, or charcoal grey. Top of panels open (no top rail).

The 30% premium — what you get.

Frameless costs ~35–40% more than semi-frameless. The extra cost buys:

  • Visual continuity. No interruption of view by posts. For a canal-frontage home, this is real.
  • Premium aesthetic. Genuine architectural read — matches premium Sanctuary Cove / Mermaid Beach properties.
  • 12mm vs 10mm glass. Marginally stronger, marginally less optical distortion.
  • Resale premium. Photographs better. Reads as “invested home.”

For a 20lm pool fence: frameless ~$15K, semi-frameless ~$10K. The $5K premium is real, but for a forever-home with a view, often worth it.

Honest recommendation.

Canal frontage, ocean view, or any premium-aesthetic priority: Frameless. The view is the asset.

Inland suburban Gold Coast (Robina, Mudgeeraba, Helensvale, Coombabah): Semi-frameless. 80% of the look at 60% of the cost.

Rental property: Semi-frameless or aluminium. Modern, low cost, easier panel replacement if damaged by tenant.

Heritage / period home: Neither — aluminium tube or wrought-iron look is more period-appropriate.
