The pool fencing process on the Gold Coast.
From the first phone call to a Form 23 Pool Safety Certificate on the QBCC register — here is every stage of a Gold Coast pool fencing project, what takes time, what you decide, and what we handle from start to finish.
Site measure & quote.
Every job starts with a free on-site measure. We visit the property, walk the full pool perimeter, and record:
- Total lineal metres of fence required
- Number and position of gates
- Ground conditions: concrete coping, pavers, timber deck, lawn or garden bed
- Coastal salt-exposure category (within 1km of bay or surf? Full marine spec.)
- Existing fence to be removed or retained
- Any QDC MP 3.4 compliance considerations: NCZ obstacles, boundary fence sections, doors and windows opening into pool zone
We provide a written fixed-price quote within 24 hours. The quote includes fence, gate, hardware, installation, site clean-up, and the Form 23 Pool Safety Certificate inspection. No hidden extras.
For a typical Gold Coast residential pool (15–25lm frameless glass, 1 gate), the measure visit takes 20–40 minutes. See our 2026 Gold Coast pool fence pricing page for indicative ranges before we visit.
Choosing your fence type: glass vs aluminium.
You have three compliant options for a Gold Coast pool fence. The measure visit is usually where we work through this with you in detail, but here is the summary:
Frameless glass — the view-preserving choice.
12mm toughened safety glass, 316 stainless spigots directly into the coping or deck, no visible posts between panels. The barrier nearly disappears when you look at it. Preferred on view-sensitive sites — Burleigh Hill, Sovereign Islands canal frontages, Paradise Waters — and for architecturally coordinated builds. Our most popular choice. See full detail on the frameless glass fencing page.
Semi-frameless glass — the popular middle ground.
10mm toughened glass between aluminium posts at 1.5m centres. Posts visible. Better value than frameless ($380–$560/lm vs $520–$780/lm) and faster lead time because it uses more standard-size glass. Strong choice for standard residential builds where the pool is not the primary view. See our semi-frameless glass page.
Aluminium tube — the cost-effective choice.
Marine alloy 6063-T5 powder-coated vertical-picket fencing. Traditional look. Fastest lead time. Most budget-conscious option ($200–$320/lm). Best for yards where the pool is not the visual centrepiece, or where budget is the primary driver. See our aluminium tube page.
Undecided between glass styles? Our frameless vs semi-frameless guide and glass vs aluminium guide break down the decision by site type, budget and visual goal.
QDC MP 3.4 layout sign-off.
Before fabrication begins, we confirm the fence layout against the QDC MP 3.4 pool safety standard. This is where we work through any site-specific compliance details so there are no surprises at Form 23 inspection time:
- NCZ clearances. We identify any objects within 900mm of the proposed fence line and advise you to relocate them before install day. Air-con condensers, garden furniture and garden bed edging are the typical items.
- Boundary fence sections. If the pool barrier uses a dividing or boundary fence, we confirm that section meets height and gap requirements and confirm with you in writing.
- Gate placement and swing direction. We confirm gate position, confirm outward swing, and specify latch height. If a second gate is needed (e.g. access from front and rear), we plan both.
- Footing type. Concrete coping gets core-drilled chemset spigots. Timber decks get structural post feet or rebated brackets. Garden beds get below-grade footings in concrete piers.
You receive the final layout in writing before you approve fabrication. No changes to the approved layout incur additional cost at install.
Manufacture & lead times.
Lead times vary by material. Here is what to expect in 2026:
- Frameless glass: 2–3 weeks from measure approval to glass delivery. Glass is cut to exact site dimensions and toughened — it cannot be cut on-site. If your site has irregular angles, allow the longer end of the range.
- Semi-frameless glass: 1.5–3 weeks. Uses more standardised glass sizes, so less cutting lead time. Posts and rails are fabricated in parallel.
- Aluminium tube: 5–10 business days. Most components are stock. Post-cutting and assembly is fast.
- Gates and hardware: MagnaLatch and D&D Safetech hardware is stock. Custom gate frames for frameless glass take 1–2 weeks.
We schedule the install date when we confirm material delivery. No guesswork. We call you the day before to confirm a start time. The lead time period is also when we recommend you complete any NCZ clearance work (relocating pots, equipment) so install day is unimpeded.
Installation day.
Most Gold Coast residential pool fence installs are completed in a single day. Larger estates (Sanctuary Cove, Sovereign Islands) or complicated frameless glass surrounds may run to two days.
What happens on install day:
- Site protection. We lay protective matting over coping, deck or garden areas in the work zone. Pavers and tiles are the most common concern.
- Footings and posts. Core-drill where needed. Set spigots or posts in chemical anchors or concrete piers. Allow 24–48 hours for concrete to cure before loading (we schedule glass delivery accordingly).
- Fence panels. Glass panels are lifted and seated in spigots (frameless) or fitted between posts (semi-frameless). Aluminium panels are screwed to posts. Each panel position is checked for plumb and level.
- Gate and hardware. Gate is hung, hinges set, MagnaLatch (or equivalent) installed at correct AFFL height. We test self-close and self-latch function from every angle before we consider the gate done.
- CPR sign. Mounted in a visible position within the pool zone. We include the current 2018 DG-006 version as standard.
- Site clean. All off-cuts, packaging and drilling debris removed. We walk the site with you at completion.
You do not need to be on-site all day. Most clients are home at the start and end. If you are not available, we coordinate key access directly.
Form 23 certification & QBCC register listing.
The final stage is the Form 23 Pool Safety Certificate. We book the formal inspection for 5–7 days after install (to allow any concrete footings to fully cure and for you to confirm NCZ clearances are done).
At the Form 23 inspection:
- Our QBCC-licensed pool safety inspector assesses the full barrier against QDC MP 3.4
- Height at every section, gaps, NCZ, gate operation, latch height, CPR sign — every item on the checklist
- If the fence passes: Form 23 is issued within 24 hours and logged on the QBCC Pool Safety Register
- If any issue is found: we fix it immediately (where possible, on the same visit) and re-inspect
The Form 23 Pool Safety Certificate is valid for 2 years if the property is owner-occupied, or 1 year if tenanted or sold. You receive a copy by email and the certificate is recorded on the QBCC register against your property address.
Our combined service means the same business that built your fence does the Form 23 inspection. We know every detail of the installation, so we can move fast if anything needs to be addressed. Full detail on our Pool Safety Certificate service and the Form 23 page.
Realistic timeframes, start to finish.
- Aluminium tube, standard residential: Measure on Day 1 → quote Day 2 → fabrication 5–10 business days → install → Form 23 inspection 5–7 days later. Total: 2–4 weeks start to finish.
- Semi-frameless glass, standard residential: Measure on Day 1 → quote Day 2 → glass fabrication 1.5–3 weeks → install → Form 23. Total: 4–6 weeks start to Form 23.
- Frameless glass, standard residential: Measure on Day 1 → quote Day 2 → glass fabrication 2–3 weeks → install → Form 23. Total: 5–7 weeks start to Form 23.
- Pre-sale compliance-only (existing fence, minor remediation): Walk-through → fixes → Form 23 inspection. Total: as fast as 48 hours if only latch and sign.
If you have a hard deadline (settlement date, lease commencement), tell us upfront. We can sequence the project to meet it and advise honestly if the timeline is not achievable given current fabrication queues.
Frequently asked questions.
How long does a pool fence installation take on the Gold Coast?
From first measure to completed install: allow 3–5 weeks for frameless glass (glass is cut to measure and takes 2–3 weeks to fabricate), 2–4 weeks for semi-frameless glass, and 1–2 weeks for aluminium tube (most components are stock). The Form 23 inspection is typically booked 5–7 days after install. Rush jobs are possible for aluminium, but glass lead times are set by the fabricator.
Do I need a building approval for a pool fence on the Gold Coast?
Replacing a pool fence with a compliant fence of the same or similar type (like-for-like or upgrade) typically falls under exempt or self-assessable development in Queensland and does not require a separate building development approval. However, if you are relocating the fence significantly or enclosing a new pool zone that changes the pool barrier layout, a building approval may be required. We advise on this during the measure and quote process.
What is included in your pool fence quote?
Our written fixed-price quote includes: site measure visit, fence panels fabricated to specification, all posts and spigots (316 marine-grade stainless on coastal sites), gate, compliant self-closing and self-latching gate hardware, CPR signage, installation labour, site clean-up, and the Form 23 Pool Safety Certificate inspection. There are no line items hidden in fine print. If site conditions require core drilling or non-standard footings, this is scoped and quoted before you commit.
Can I stay in my home during pool fence installation?
Yes. Pool fence installation is an outdoor job and does not require you to vacate. Most Gold Coast residential installs are completed in a single day (aluminium) or 1–2 days (glass). We cordon the work area and ensure safe access to the rest of the property throughout. Pool water must not be used for 24 hours after install if any concrete work is involved in the footing.
What is the difference between frameless and semi-frameless for a pool fence?
Frameless glass uses 12mm toughened glass panels fixed directly to stainless spigots with no visible posts between panels. It gives an almost invisible barrier. Semi-frameless glass uses 10mm glass between aluminium posts at around 1.5m centres — posts are visible. Frameless is more expensive ($520–$780/lm installed vs $380–$560/lm) and better for view-sensitive sites. Semi-frameless is the more popular choice for standard Gold Coast residential builds. See our full guides at the glass vs aluminium and frameless vs semi-frameless pages.
