Most Gold Coast pool fence installs are 1 to 2 days on site, and this is every hour of it

Direct answer: a typical 24 lineal metre Gold Coast pool fence is 1 to 2 days on site. Aluminium tube is a half day to a day, semi-frameless glass is about a day, and frameless is 1 to 2 days because every spigot is core drilled and chemically anchored into concrete. Before that there is a 2 to 5 business day wait for stock materials or 7 to 15 business days for custom toughened glass, and afterwards a separate 30 to 60 minute visit from an independent Pool Safety Inspector, usually 3 to 10 business days later. Total elapsed time from signed quote to certificate on the register is commonly 3 to 5 weeks, or 2 weeks if everything is stock sizes and it is not the December to March storm season.

Access, parking, power and water

Glass panels are carried in on edge with suction cups, so we need a clear path at least 800mm wide with about 2.1 metres of headroom from the kerb to the pool. On older Gold Coast blocks with an air-conditioning condenser or a rainwater tank pinching the side path, panels sometimes have to come through the house or over a fence, which adds an hour and two more sets of hands. Tell us at quoting stage and it costs nothing. Discovering it at 7am on install day costs a morning.

Parking matters more than people expect. On the canal estates and the tighter streets around Mermaid Beach and Palm Beach there is often nowhere legal to leave a trailer, so getting your own cars off the driveway is genuinely the difference between an on-time start and a late one. Gated estates including Sanctuary Cove and Sovereign Islands require contractor vehicles to be registered at the gate and impose their own working hours, and a body corporate complex will usually want a works notice lodged and an induction done in advance.

We need one outdoor tap and one 10 amp power point. The tap feeds the wet core drill, which is what stops the diamond bit burning and keeps the dust down. If your tap pressure is poor or the closest one is 40 metres away, say so and we will bring a tank. If your outdoor circuit trips under load, tell us on day one rather than after we have lost a bit in a hole.

Noise, dust, smell and the mess

The genuinely loud stage is core drilling, and it sounds like an angle grinder running in bursts of two to four minutes per hole. On a 20 panel job that is about 40 holes spread across three to five hours. Under Queensland environmental law, audible building work at a residence is restricted to 6:30am to 6:30pm Monday to Saturday and is not allowed on Sundays or public holidays. We work inside those hours, and on a tight canal block we would rather you gave the neighbours a heads up the day before than have them find out at 8am.

Because the drilling is water fed, the mess is wet grey slurry rather than airborne dust. That is much better for your lungs and much worse for travertine and light coloured pavers if it is left to dry, so it gets vacuumed and washed as we go. Slurry must not enter the stormwater system or a canal, and on the Gold Coast that is taken seriously by council and by the neighbours: it goes into a bunded tub, the solids are bagged and the water is disposed of properly. There is a mild chemical smell for an hour or so when the anchor resin goes off, similar to two part epoxy, and it dissipates outdoors quickly.

Pets, kids and working from home

The hour that matters is the removal stage. For those two to three hours the pool has no barrier at all, and every adult on site is carrying panels rather than watching a toddler. Children indoors or off-site, dogs inside or at day care, and no exceptions for the well behaved ones. If the job will run past the end of a day with the barrier incomplete, the pool cannot simply be left: we install temporary mesh fencing at $180 to $350, and if any contractor proposes leaving your pool open overnight, stop the job.

Working from home is entirely workable. Take your calls at the front of the house between 9am and 2pm, and the rest of the day is background noise. The crew will need to walk past you to reach the tap and the power point, and they will need one conversation with you at handover, so a completely uninterrupted day of meetings is optimistic.

Weather, and what actually stops work

The Gold Coast gets roughly 1,300 to 1,400 millimetres of rain a year and most of it lands between January and March. Three things stop a pool fence install: steady rain, because chemical anchors and silicone do not cure reliably in water; wind, because carrying a 43kg sheet of glass on edge in a strong gust is how people get hurt; and lightning within a few kilometres, because we are handling metal and water in an open yard. A summer job that was two days often becomes three or four calendar days when the afternoon storms roll in off the hinterland. Nothing is lost, but the calendar moves.

What a clean site looks like, and where the waste goes

At handover the paving should be washed, not just swept, with no grey slurry film in the joints. Cores, offcuts, packaging, silicone tubes and the old fence should all be on the trailer, not stacked behind the shed for a later trip. Drop sheets come up, the pool should be free of debris, and the gate should be tested in front of you.

Old aluminium and stainless go to a metal recycler and the scrap value is offset against your removal charge of $25 to $45 per lineal metre. Toughened glass is a different matter: it is not the same composition as container glass and it cannot go into kerbside recycling, so panels go to a construction and demolition waste facility and are charged by weight. Concrete cores and dried slurry solids go the same way. If your quote includes removal, all of that should be in the price with no separate tip fee appearing later.

The honest constraint

Not every pool needs any of this. If your existing barrier is straight, the panels are tight and every gap measures under 100mm, the whole job may be a gate hardware replacement at $280 to $650 and an inspection, which is a two hour visit with no drilling, no waste and no disruption at all.
